As the reformer machine gets more and more popular it is important that clients and prospective clients know that there is a real difference between Reformer Classes (often called Dynamic Pilates or any other gimmicky name) and a Pilates Class using a Reformer.

Do you know the difference?

Both are great in their own way, but you need to know what you are paying for and what your class will look like…

If you want to do a workout that transitions from the gym floor/HIIT class – ie lots of lunges, jumping, added weights & plank sequences that give you the ‘burn’ or elevated heart rate then you are probably good with a Reformer class. Basic moves layered to challenge you in sets. Quite possibly a bit cheaper than your Pilates class.

However if you want to do Pilates on the Reformer, still feeling the heat, the shakes, but being challenged safely and so much more with technique, posture, flexibility, mobility, proprioception, strength, stretch and range, with a massive emphasis on the Pilates Principles, Control, Precision, Flow, Breath, Concentration & Centre (balance), you are looking for a REFORMER PILATES CLASS with a FULLY TRAINED instructor who is WELL QUALIFIED in Pilates and can support you on your Pilates journey.

It is a very important distinction.

Both can be amazing in their own right and can have a place if defined correctly. It depends totally on what you are looking for.

I am classically and contemporary trained in Pilates for Mat, Reformer and the Wunda Chair  – I continue my learning, training and understanding in the Pilates method continuously. I would never teach anything I wasn’t trained and confident in.

So I teach in different ways, for the client in front of me. Classic, contemporary or a combination of both. Giving you the best of both worlds.

This next bit could upset a few people – which is not my intention, this is my opinion on my beliefs of true Pilates…Plus you’ve got/read this far…

If you are doing endless sets of lunges, planks, cardio style exercises using a reformer machine, you will feel the burn & like you have had a workout, BUT this is NOT AT ALL what PILATES is truly about.

You will get all those things and so much more of a safe & guided workout with an instructor who knows what they are doing.

Just be really clear on what you are paying for.

There I said it!
